SECTION 01
Dynamics of Indonesia – United Kingdom Economic Relations
Bilateral economic relations between Indonesia and the United Kingdom have embarked on a dynamic trajectory following the UK's departure from the European Union. Anchored by the City of London as the preeminent global financial services capital and a world pioneer in green decarbonization finance, the UK views Indonesia as a pivotal anchor partner in Southeast Asia. Bilateral commerce is institutionalized through the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO), which focuses on removing non-tariff barriers and accelerating green infrastructure capital deployment.
Indonesia's export basket to the UK is led by competitively priced manufactured consumer goods and legally certified forestry products. Indonesia is the only nation worldwide whose legal wood and paper shipments enjoy 100% green-lane recognition under the FLEGT-VPA agreement, bypassing regulatory due-diligence scrutiny upon arrival at British ports. Additional core exports include athletic footwear, ethically certified apparel, electrical components, and premium specialty plantation crops such as single-origin Arabica coffee and black tea. In reverse, Indonesia imports high-power gas turbines (Rolls-Royce), aerospace mechanical equipment, luxury motor vehicles, fine specialty chemicals, and advanced biopharmaceuticals (AstraZeneca, GSK).
“The UK and Indonesia are forging a forward-looking post-Brexit economic corridor: DCTS preferential tariffs and full FLEGT forestry recognition unlock unmatched opportunities for sustainable manufacturing and London green capital.”
Through the UK's Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), Indonesian manufacturers benefit from zero-tariff access across thousands of tariff lines, establishing an exceptional framework to expand market footprint across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
